The Monkey On My Back by Debbi Morgan is by far one of the best books I’ve read this year. The book is a memoir by Debbi Morgan, who some of you may know from the soap opera All My Children where she played Angie Hubbard…
She also played in a few movies like Love & Basketball and Eve’s Bayou…
This book is not your typical boring memoir. In fact, it is not boring at all. The book is told in both the first person (the author talks about her life and relationships) and the third person, which reads like a creative non-fiction book. The portion of the book that is told from the third person point of view is about the author’s parents and her maternal grandparents.
The author, her mother, and her grandmother each suffered through physically abusive relationships/marriages. The author grows up watching her mother get beat by her father who would come home every Friday night drunk. The author’s mother grew up watching her mother get beat by her father who would come home every weekend drunk. Not surprisingly, the author grows up and experiences many of the same issues in her relationships.
There are parts of this book that made me laugh out loud. There are parts of this book that had me asking, “What the fuck?” Without giving too much away, I will say this book is worth buying and reading. I really enjoyed it and I’m sure you will enjoy it as well.
