A face from the past has re-entered my life (I think)…
Yesterday night I was chilling in bed browsing the internet when I got a call from a phone number I didn’t recognize. The woman on the other end of the line was Chocolate.
For those of you who don’t remember, Chocolate is the lady I fell back on when Yellow Bone and I were going through some issues. I wouldn’t call her a rebound chick because I liked Chocolate. However, I was still in love with Yellow Bone.
So, once Yellow Bone and I resolved our problems I ran back to her. In the process I left Chocolate heartbroken. When things didn’t work out with Yellow Bone I tried to slide back into Chocolate’s heart, but she wasn’t having it (and I don’t blame her….that’s some foul shit on my part).
Anyway, if you want to read more about this awkward love triangle you will have to browse the archives of my old blog.
Chocolate and I kept in touch for a while, but no matter how much I tried she kept me at arm’s length. She made it clear I wasn’t going to have the opportunity to break her heart again.
Chocolate is nicknamed Chocolate because she is a pretty dark-skinned woman. I met her at my old job some time ago (I guess I just have a thing for dark-skinned women I work with…SMH….referring to Red).
Needless to say I was surprised (in a good way) to hear from her. She told me she came across a picture she and I took together at a photo booth and she wondered what I was doing with my life. I told her about becoming a homeowner, home renovations, and just living day to day.
She told me about her life as well. Chocolate told me she was engaged to a woman who is a cosmetologist.
I immediately felt my heart sinking, but then Chocolate said…
“It didn’t work out. We decided to go our separate ways.”
I can’t lie. I was immediately relieved. The lump that was forming in my throat disappeared.
She told me that she decided to go back to school to pursue a master’s degree.
I listened to her talk about working full-time while going to school at night. She asked me some questions about my life before saying, “I know you’re probably married by now. You always talked about getting married…”
I responded, “True, but it hasn’t happened for me yet.”
Chocolate (chuckling): Whaaaatt?
Me: I’m single….(meaningful pause)….and looking.
Chocolate chuckled again, but she didn’t comment.
I decided to change the subject. I asked Chocolate if she would like to have lunch with me one day. She said yes. The conversation continued from there.
I don’t know what to make of all this or if I should make anything of it. After the way I treated Chocolate I feel like I’m always walking on thin ice with her.
Most importantly of all I don’t know if she just gave me a door to walk through or if I should just take this random conversation as a friendly chat between old friends.
