I just got done watching An Officer and a Gentleman on television. I love this movie. It’s been one of my favorites since I was a little girl. Though the plot is a bit cliche, I’ve always liked it because I like happy endings. I like fairy tales. Plus I have always been in love with the ending…

What woman doesn’t dream of being swept off her feet? Even I would love to be swept off my feet or I would love to sweep someone off their feet. It’s definitely #goals for the near future. I’m guessing that’s why so many of us enjoy royal weddings, though we don’t give a shit about the royals themselves. We like the pomp and circumstance.

As I was watching this movie I started thinking, “Damn…whatever happened to movies like this?”

I can’t remember the last time I watched a romance movie and I sure as hell can’t think of the last time I watched a BLACK romance movie (as far as I can tell this genre never really took off with black people). We’ve had some romantic comedies, but I can’t think of a single full-ledge black romance movie outside of Love & Basketball.

Nowadays the only movies Hollywood seems to produce are comic book movies, action movies, and horror movies. This is when they aren’t remaking movies that should never be remade.

Originality seems to be a thing of the past and women…of all races…have pretty much been pushed out door.

But when did it get this way?

I don’t know. I haven’t been paying much attention to Hollywood. I rarely go to the movies and when I do it’s usually something that whoever I’m with wanted to see.

And it’s not just movies…it’s television as well.

Periodically I tune in to daytime soap operas, which to me are trying too hard to compete with Love & Hip Hop and other reality television shows. Romance is gone from the genre. Now everyone is sleeping with everyone, having kids with everyone, and using/abusing everyone. There aren’t anymore super couples like Luke/Laura, Bo/Hope, and Victor/Nikki.

Weddings? Forget about it.

Due to budget cuts I can’t even remember the last time I saw a REAL nice soap opera wedding. They don’t make them like this anymore…

It’s no wonder why kids today don’t give a damn about family and romance. All they see is broken families and sex in the media and that’s all they hear in music. We can’t even get any decent ballads like these anymore in kid’s movies…

At least I can say at the tender age of 33 I grew up with all of the above.
